A short ferry ride away from Seattle, but wondrously off the grid, Vashon Island is a lush and lovely day trip to clear your head and soak up some green.
Take the West Seattle ferry, car and driver around $20, or ride your bike on a sunny day for $6.50. Have lunch in the little (very) town of Vashon, shop at the boutiques (I bought a set of bamboo chimes there that makes the loveliest music for me in a summer breeze), and if you’re very lucky, you’ll get a spectacular glimpse of Mt. Rainier on the ferry ride there or back, that majestic snow-covered prince we locals refer to simply as “the mountain.”
Just go! And don’t forget your camera!
